End Jailbreaks Or Get Fired, FG Tells NPS Boss

The minister of interior, Comrade Abba Moro yesterday, told the newly appointed Controller General of Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS) Dr Peter Ekpendu to put an end to incessant jailbreaks in the country, as well as clamp down on officials who conspire with external forces to free inmates, or get relieved of his job.

The minister who sounded the warning while officially decorating the new CG, and his counterpart from the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Joseph G. Anebi with their new ranks, in Abuja, said, “Henceforth, if there is jailbreak in any prison those in charge will be held responsible. I want you to do your best and weed the prison of such characters who are bent on frustrating our efforts”.

Moro charged the prison officials to take their responsibilities serious. He said, “The uniform that you wear today bears a sign of responsibility, it is an epitome of responsibility ,you must take responsibility and anything to the contrary is not acceptable. to us.

In the ministry. “I therefore, charge you today Mr Controller General to take adequate steps and sanitise the Prisons immediately. I will hold you accountable for any failure on the part of the Service henceforth,” Moro directed.

Lamenting that the country was presently facing security challenges and the Services must complement the federal government in its effort to stamp out insurgency in the country, he stressed that the country had witnessed too many security problems in recent times and would not tolerate the release of hardened criminals back to the society.

Moro said, ‘the consequence for failure is too grave for us and for the nation. We can’t continue to make promise to Nigerians because the situation is becoming aggravated. You should be ready to fulfill the responsibility put on your shoulder.

Describing the exercise as the peak of their career, Comrade Moro particularly warned the Controller of Prisons, that the ban on the usage of phones by both inmate and officers on duty remains. He said,

“Nigeria looks up to you for the security of our prisons. Nigerians are facing a lot of trauma resulting from insurgency, they can’t add the release of criminals into the society to compound our security situation.’

“At this time of security challenges which the federal government is fighting hard to contain, it will be disastrous to release another set of dangerous criminals on the society. We all must team up to address

the problem”.

The minister also charged the decorated Controller General of Fire Service to ensure the full implementation of the fire alarm system as well as fire safety codes so as to safe Nigerians from the dangers posed by fire disasters.
