Emir of Nigeria’s Mubi returns home

The emir of Nigerian town of Mubi in Adamawa State has returned to the city after it was liberated from the Takfiri Boko Haram militants.

Alh Abubakar Isah Ahmadu, who had taken refuge in the provincial city of Yola after his emirate fell into the hands of the militants two months ago, was reinstalled in his palace on Friday amid tight security.

The traditional ruler praised the Nigerian army for liberating Mubi, hoping that other towns which are also under his domain including Michika and Madagali will be also retaken from the Boko Haram militants.

“We appreciate the gallant efforts of the Nigerian military, hunters and vigilantes that saw the liberation of our towns,” he said.

Mubi's town gate is now guarded by an army tank and fortified by sandbags as residents return from the mountain hideouts.

In recent months, Boko Haram has been tightening its grip on northeastern Nigeria, capturing the towns of Gwoza, Damask, Bama, Gamboru-Ngala, Dikwa, Mafa as well as some surrounding villages, all in Borno State.

Boko Haram, whose name means “Western education is forbidden,” has claimed responsibility for a number of deadly shooting and bombing attacks in various parts of Nigeria, which have left more than 10,000 people dead so far.

On April 14, the Takfiri group kidnapped 276 students from their secondary school in the northeastern town of Chibok in Borno, triggering worldwide outrage. Reports say 57 of the girls managed to escape, but 219 are still missing.
