Tambuwal, Amaechi under police fire

Thousands of All Progressives Con­gress (APC) mem­bers, led by the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie- Oyegun and Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amae­chi yesterday stormed the Nigeria Police Force Head­quarters, Abuja, to protest the withdrawal of the secu­rity aides of the Speaker of the House of Representa­tives, Aminu Tambuwal.

The speaker recently de­fected from Peoples Demo­cratic Party (PDP).

The protesters, carrying placards of different inscrip­tions, disrupted activities at the Force Headquarters as they prevented policemen, visitors and vehicles from gaining access to the premises.

Singing various anti-police songs, the protesters caused serious traffic jam along the Shehu Shagari Way, Asokoro, where the Force Headquarters is located before they depart­ed.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Suleiman Abba, however, described Amaechi’s action in barricad­ing the entrance to the Force Headquarters as a deliberate attempt to provoke the police.

He warned aggrieved poli­ticians and their supporters to seek redress in the court rather than disturbing the peace of law-abiding citizens.

Abba equally advised poli­ticians to take their campaign to the doorsteps of the elector­ate and not to disrupt activities in government offices.

The police boss said even though the action of the gov­ernor was to provoke the po­lice to an open confrontation, the latter disappointed the former and his followers by exhibiting restraint.

Abba, in a statement signed by the Force Public Rela­tions Officer, CP Emmanuel Ojukwu, said: “The incident, though provocative and un­civilised, ended without any confrontation as the police exhibited maximum restraint in the face of ceaseless provo­cation by these leaders and their motley crowd.”
