NASS Fracas: Don’t Derail Democracy, Tukur Cautions Police, Lawmakers

Against the backdrop of the crisis that ensued at the National Assembly premises last week, immediate past national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Dr Bamanga Tukur has cautioned the political class, security operatives and government officials to desist from actions that could derail democracy in Nigeria.

The former PDP chairman further called for a probe of the incident at the National Assembly premises last Thursday with a view to making amends and preventing a future occurrence.

Tukur, who observed that democracy in the country is currently being rocked to its foundation, said every Nigerian entrusted with sensitive public position must learn to first place national interest above every other consideration in his or her service to Nigeria.

The National Assembly was shut down last week Thursday after a chaotic crisis of confidence between security operatives and speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, who was initially denied entry into the premises.

Tukur, in a statement, urged the two parties to be mindful of national interest as they attempt to address their differences, just as he cautioned against partisan politics that could hamper the democratic journey of the country.

He noted that “A pang of depression ran through him, while watching federal legislators as they scaled high barricades to gain access to their offices.
