Boko Haram : Group Hails Emir Sanusi II’s Advice On Self Defence

StandupforNigeria Youth Initiative has lauded the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II, for telling Nigerians to rise up and defend themselves against insurgents in the country even as the Nigerian military reclaimed the town of Chibok, Borno State from the control of the Boko Haram terrorist group.

In a statement in Abuja yesterday, Executive Secretary, StandupforNigeria Youth Initiative, Adeyemi Moyegun, said Emir Sanusi II’s statement came at a time when towns captured by Boko Haram terrorists group were been reclaimed by the military with the help of local hunters and vigilante groups.

“It is encouraging to see one of Nigeria’s most influential Muslim leaders take such a strong stand against the terrorists who pervert Islam, but realistically the struggle against Boko Haram will only be won if it is led by the Nigerian military, and in partnership with our international allies.

“Chibok has particular symbolic value since it is home to the more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram in April, the one incident in the current conflict that caught the attention of the international community”, it said.

Moyegun said the liberation of Chibok town is good news, it is vital to understand not only that the girls are still missing, but also that there is much more to than conflict than their terrible plight.

He said Boko Haram shares exactly the same poisonous ideology as with Al-Qaeda or Islamic State and the groups have expressed their mutual support.

He further lamented the lack of attention to crisis in Nigeria by the international community saying that “while the world sits up and takes notice when the likes of Islamic State do these things in Syria and Iraq, Boko Haram’s brutal terrorist insurgency in Nigeria barely registers. While the international community is committing ever greater funds, arms and logistical support to defeat IS, its support for Nigeria has been limited to sharing information, expertise and training. This is not enough to enable our government to tackle what amounts to a regional manifestation of a global menace.

“It overruns towns and murders civilians, often by beheading them; it burns down Churches, Mosques and schools, and forces people to observe its barbaric interpretation of sharia law. Just recently it slaughtered dozens of schoolboys in the town of Potiskum in Yobe state”, he said.

Moyegun called on all Nigerians to stand up for Nigeria as well as the comity of nations to help the Nigerian government fight against terror.
