Conference Of Speakers Rejects New Ekiti House Speaker

Speakers of 35 states' Houses of Assembly ‎has said that they would not recognise Hon. Dele Olugbemi as the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly.
They made this known under a forum which encompasses all the speakers of the 36 states of the federation, the  Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures (CSSL).
 
It will be recalled that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members of the House of Assembly, on Thursday, November 20, impeached Dr Adewale Omirin as their Speaker and appointed Mr Dele Olugbemi from Ikole Constituency II, who recently defected to the PDP from the All Progressives Congress, as his replacement.
 
According to the Minority Leader, Hon. Samuel Ajibola, said the decision became imperative following “Omirin and his deputy absence without official notice,” adding that “the business of the House cannot grind to a halt as government is a continuum.”
 
The lawmakers, according to Ajibola, found “Omirin guilty of revealing official secrets, misappropriation of Assembly funds and signing of bonds with the past executive without the knowledge of other members of the House.”
 
However, the CSSL's chairman  and also Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon. Sam Ikon, while addressing journalists in Abuja at an interactive session of Civil Society Organizations and Speakers of State Houses of Assembly on "Constitution Amendment Bills awaiting passage" organised by the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), said that the group still recognised Dr. Adewale Omirin as the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly because the mode of his impeachment was illegal and unconstitutional.
