Family members sentenced to death in Farzana’s murder case

LAHORE – In the murder case of Farzana Iqbal, a three-month pregnant woman bludgeoned to death in Lahore, a local court on Wednesday ordered father, brother, cousin and her former husband to be hanged thrice for the gruesome act of killing.

Farzana Iqbal, 25, was killed by her angry family members in May this year outside the Lahore High Court. Reports said that the attackers crushed her head with bricks only because she fell in love with and married a man, Muhammed Iqbal, instead of a cousin they had selected for her.

Issuing the ruling nearly five months after the tragedy, the court also fined the convicts Rs100, 000 each. The killing sparked outrage because of its brazen and brutal nature. The United States branded the incident heinous and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif demanded immediate action to catch the killers.

United Nations also condemned Farzana's killing.
